Vaccinium myrtillus is a particular species of blueberry, native to Northern Europe and one of the most widespread wild plants in Sweden. Bilberry was one of the first remedies sold in Swedish pharmacies. The protective action against oxidative stress damage lies in the berries that contain the anthocyanic glycosides, colored pigments responsible for the blue color. These compounds have different functions at the view level:
-they strengthen the capillaries improving their elasticity and tone so that the eye can maintain its visual capacity;
-improve blood circulation in the retina;
-prevent or delay problems related to macular degeneration (central area of the retina);
-improve visual sensitivity in the dark, favoring and increasing the regeneration of rhodopsin, a pigment of the retina essential for crepuscular vision;
–they have a capillary-protective property useful in case of capillary fragility on the retina.
The ability of the anthocyanin components of the blueberry to increase the antioxidant defense mechanisms in the retina has been demonstrated in a Canadian study carried out on rabbits that have been specifically induced a retinal degeneration. The berries are also rich in Vitamin A or retinol, essential for the eyesight because together with its precursors, carotenoids, it is part of the components of rhodopsin, the substance present on the retina that gives the eye its sensitivity to light.
The effectiveness of Blue Berry ™ is increased by the presence of the Grape seed extract from the antioxidant activity. Lutein is the most common xanthine in nature. Calendula is a plant with fresh and very green foliage; with flowers similar to the carnation. Its colors vary from yellow to orange. For Blue Berry the petals of the calendula are used, from which the lutein is extracted. Lutein (together with zeaxanthin) is the major constituent of the spotted pigment of the human retina, with the function of protection from UV rays. Recent studies have shown that lutein can have positive effects on cholesterol present in the plasma and can limit the onset of some types of cancer. In smaller quantities, lutein is also present in the crystalline lens and in this regard it is attributed the ability to counteract cataracts (a disease due precisely to the clouding of the lens of the eye).
