Acidif is a food supplement based on L-methionine and concentrated dry cranberry Canadian cranberry extract with a high level of proanthocyanidins.
It is presented in "Retard" tablets with gradual release and a gastroprotective coating. This optimizes tolerability and guarantees a constant release of its components over time.
Methionine (more specifically L-methionine) is an essential amino acid; contains sulfur in its chemical formula. Its functions are numerous; participates in the synthesis processes of various substances including carnitine, cysteine, cystine, creatine, taurine, lecithin, choline, vitamin B12. It is a substance with lipotropic properties (that is, it facilitates the metabolism of lipids).
Methionine is used for the treatment of chronic urinary infections and in subjects suffering from phosphate stones. In the case of chronic urinary infections it allows an acidification of the urine; oral intake causes a shift in urinary pH to occur in a range ranging from 5.4 to 6.2; in such an acid environment the pathogenic bacteria adhere more easily to the urothelium and the growth of bacterial strains is inhibited; since urinary infections characterized by urinary alkalosis can be the cause of phosphatic calculosis, the acidification of the urine through methionine intake favors the solubility of the stones and prevents their formation.
Cranberry is rich in proanthocyanidins (PACs), whose function is to facilitate the correct functionality of the urinary tract, creating unfavorable conditions for the development of cystitis. The cranberry acts at the level of the epithelium that covers the bladder, decreasing the adhesion capacity of the most common pathogenic bacteria, thanks to the action of PACs, which represent the most active component of the plant. They facilitate the elimination of bacteria through the urine.
